Shopify POS Common Troubleshooting Guide UK

If you’ve ever found yourself restarting your iPad while a queue of customers grows, you aren't alone. Shopify POS hardware not connecting, is a common thing we get asked about, whether it's USB, Bluetooth or Wireless connection. In most cases, the issue isn't a broken device but a configuration error.

1. "My Star Printer is Connected but Not Printing"

Often, your iPad settings say the printer is "Connected," but the Shopify app doesn't see it.

  • Fix: Check the Local Network Permissions. On your iPad, go to Settings > Shopify POS and ensure the "Local Network" toggle is switched to ON. Without this, the app is "blind" to any hardware on your Wi-Fi or Ethernet network.

  • Tip: If you are using a Star TSP143IIIU, ensure you are using the official Apple-certified cable. Third-party "cheap" cables often lack the data pins required to send print commands from the POS app.

2. "Socket Mobile Scanner Won’t Pair (Bluetooth Error)"

Many retailers struggle with a scanner that appears in Bluetooth settings but refuses to scan items into the cart.

  • Fix: Your scanner is likely in the wrong "Mode." For Shopify POS to work, the scanner must be in Application Mode. If it’s acting like a keyboard (typing numbers into a search bar), it won't work correctly.

  • Reset: To fix this, unpair the scanner from your iPad, then scan the specific "Factory Reset" barcode from your manual. Once reset, scan the "1-Step Setup" barcode specifically for iOS/Shopify before re-pairing.

3. "The Cash Drawer Won’t Open Automatically"

This is a physical setup issue that often catches out new store owners. In a Shopify system, the cash drawer relies on the printer.

  • Fix: Ensure your cash drawer is plugged into the DK (Drawer Kick) port on the back of your receipt printer using an RJ11/RJ12 cable.

  • Check the App: In the Shopify POS app, tap Settings > Manage Connected Hardware. Tap on your printer and ensure the "Test Cash Drawer" button works. If it doesn't, check that the drawer isn't physically locked with the key!

4. "POS Terminal/Card Reader Keeps Disconnecting"

With the 2026 updates to Shopify Payments, a stable connection for your card reader is vital for UK "Tap to Pay" compliance.

  • Fix: Most disconnections are caused by Wi-Fi signal "noise." If you are in a busy area (like a shopping centre), Bluetooth and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi are crowded.

  • We recommend the Shopify POS Terminal Dock with a hardwired Ethernet connection. If you must use Wi-Fi, ensure your iPad and Reader are on the same 5GHz band to avoid interference.

5. "Barcode Not Recognised"

If your scanner beeps but the product doesn't appear, it’s usually a data sync issue rather than a hardware failure.

  • Fix: Go to Settings > Data Synchronisation in the POS app. If "Products & Inventory" shows a red icon, your hardware is trying to scan items the app hasn't "indexed" yet. Tap "Refresh All" to force a sync.

  • Hardware Check: Ensure your printer's DPI (dots per inch) is high enough. If you’re using a low-quality label printer, the barcode edges may be "fuzzy," making it impossible for even the best Socket Mobile scanner to read. Ask us for a printer recommendation.Β
