Ubiquiti sunMAX SolarPoint (SM-SP-40)
The Ubiquiti SM-SP-40 is a remotely managed, carrier-class Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) solar charge controller and network switch built for demanding off-grid installations. Housed in a heavy-duty, UV-stabilised weatherproof casing, this intelligent node consolidates solar power harvesting, external battery management, and multi-port device routing into a single compact enclosure.
Designed specifically for remote telecommunications, asset tracking, and off-grid wireless base stations, the SolarPoint bridges the gap between clean solar power and local 24V hardware networks.
Maximum Power Point Tracking & Smart Battery Regulation
The primary power core of the SM-SP-40 utilises advanced charging logic to maximise solar collection efficiency across changing environmental conditions:
-
Intelligent MPPT Power Optimisation: Continuously tracks the internal voltage curve of connected photovoltaic (PV) panels across an expansive 10V to 60V input window. This dynamic load balancing captures the absolute peak wattage available from the sun, even during heavy winter overcast cycles.
-
7A Multi-Stage Lead-Acid Charging: Regulates continuous delivery up to 7 Amps into external 24V battery systems. The charging block natively handles Sealed Lead-Acid (SLA), AGM, and Gel batteries with precision multi-step absorption and floating voltage stages to prolong battery life.
-
Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) Safeties: Ships out of the box with a dedicated NTC thermistor temperature probe. This provides hardware-level heat protection, dynamically adjusting charging parameters based on local battery temperatures and suspending operation if thermal limits are breached.
Hardware Interface & Power Distribution Layout
The bottom terminal compartment breaks down power generation across physical interfaces, managing an aggregate output capacity of 40 Watts shared between PoE and raw DC terminals:
| Hardware Port Group | Physical Media Interface | Output Routing Configuration | Maximum Port Power Profile |
| PV Input | 1 Pair of Industry-Standard H4 Jacks | Solar Panel Inbound String Gate | 10A Max Input / 60V Max Open Circuit |
| Ports 1 - 4 (PoE) | 4 x 10/100 Fast Ethernet RJ45 | 24V Passive PoE (Pins 4, 5+; 7, 8-) | 17 Watts Aggregate Limit |
| DC Out Terminal | 2-Pin Screw Terminal Block | Raw 24V DC Auxiliary Feed Line | 24 Watts Dedicated Peak |
| Battery Terminal | Multi-Pin Screw Block | External 24V Storage Loop | 7A Configurable Charge Output |
Predictive Artificial Intelligence & Cloud Management
-
UISP Predictive Analytics: Fully integrated with the Ubiquiti Internet Service Provider (UISP) platform. The SolarPoint uses predictive algorithms coupled with localised weather forecasting data to actively map your solar installation's future energy capture. It alerts operators if upcoming regional weather anomalies threaten to exhaust stored battery capacities.
-
Dual-Tier Low-Voltage Disconnect (LVD): Features granular battery drain protection rules. System administrators can configure two separate software priority tiers to drop non-essential client nodes first if the battery falls below safe levels, keeping critical telemetry systems online for longer.
-
Standalone 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi Configuration: For easy field deployments, the device broadcasts a localised, short-range 2.4 GHz wireless setup network. Technicians can configure charging limits, verify solar panel open-circuit voltages, and check historical power charts directly from a phone at the base of the mast.
Deployment Engineering Enclosure Note: The SM-SP-40 features an advanced IPX4 weatherproof rating and a UV-resistant structural polycarbonate body. It is built for direct deployment on high outdoor poles or towers using standard jubilee straps, operating reliably in temperatures ranging from -20Β°C up to 50Β°C.
