What devices can I run the Shopify POS app on?
  • Apple iOS: You must use an iPad (5th generation or higher), iPad Air (2nd generation or higher), iPad mini (4th generation or higher), or iPhone (7 or higher) running iOS 15.1 or later.
  • Android: You can use a tablet or phone running the official Android version 10.0 or higher, with Google Play Services and Google Mobile Services activated.
  • Unsupported: The app does not run on desktop computers, laptops, or Amazon Fire tablets.



Do I have to buy hardware from the Shopify Hardware Store?

Card Readers/Payment Terminals: These must be purchased directly from Shopify or an authorised Shopify Partner, as they are proprietary and specifically integrated with Shopify Payments (e.g., the Shopify Tap & Chip Reader or the WisePad 3 in the UK/EU).

Other Peripherals (Printers, Scanners, Drawers): You can purchase these from third-party retailers, but you must ensure the exact model number is listed on Shopify's official compatible hardware guide. Using unsupported models can lead to configuration issues and you will have limited troubleshooting assistance from Shopify Support.

How does the cash drawer connect to the POS system?

Shopify POS compatible cash drawers (like the Star Micronics CD4-1616) are typically printer-driven. They do not connect directly to the tablet or phone.

Instead, they connect via a cable (usually RJ12) into the back of your compatible receipt printer.





Can I use a regular off-the-shelf Bluetooth barcode scanner?

Generally, no. While some generic Human Interface Device (HID) mode scanners might work for basic functionality, Shopify officially supports and recommends Socket Mobile scanners (S700 for 1D barcodes, S740 or S720 for 1D/2D barcodes) and specific Zebra models (like the DS2208).
