Understanding the Hardware Specs

When comparing UK till drawers, the dimensions are critical for fitting under-counter brackets. A standard 410mm drawer is built for heavy-duty use with metal ball-bearing rollers, while a 330mm compact model is lighter for portability.

Weight is often a sign of build quality; a heavier drawer usually indicates a thicker steel gauge, providing better security and a longer lifespan in busy hospitality environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my cash drawer work with Shopify/Square/Zettle?

In the UK, most mobile POS systems (Shopify, Square, Zettle, SumUp) do not connect directly to a cash drawer. Instead, the drawer plugs into the DK (Drawer Kick) port of a compatible receipt printer (like a Star Micronics or Epson) using an RJ11/RJ12 cable. When the printer finishes a receipt, it sends a 24V signal to "kick" the drawer open. If you don't have a printer, you must use a USB Cash Drawer or a Bluetooth Trigger Box.

What is the difference between 12V and 24V cash drawers?

24V (Standard): This is what 99% of UK receipt printers (Star, Epson, Bixolon) require.

12V: Occasionally used by older, legacy POS terminals or specific EPOS all-in-one systems.

Risk: Plugging a 12V drawer into a 24V printer can burn out the solenoid (the motor that opens the drawer). Always check your printer's manual, but 24V is the UK retail standard.

Are cash drawers universal?

The physical drawer is usually universal, but the cable and voltage are the variables. Most drawers in the UK use an RJ11 to RJ11 cable (looks like an old landline phone plug). However, some brands like Star Micronics sometimes require a specific "Star-to-Standard" cable where the pins are wired differently.

What are 'Media Slots' for?

You’ll see 1 or 2 thin slots on the front of the drawer. These allow staff to slide cheques, credit card slips, or high-value Β£50 notes directly under the coin tray without opening the drawer. This keeps large amounts of cash hidden from view, increasing security in busy environments.
