Ubiquiti EdgeMAX EdgeRouter 6 PoE (ER-6P)
The Ubiquiti ER-6P is a carrier-grade, high-density Gigabit routing gateway engineered to deliver heavy packet processing and localised line power injection within a compact, fanless desktop footprint. Part of the hardened EdgeMAX processing family, this high-performance platform is purpose-built for independent internet service providers (WISPs), network distribution cabinets, and demanding commercial automation networks.
Equipped with a powerful hardware-offload engine, the ER-6P sustains an exceptional forwarding rate of up to 3.4 million packets per second (pps) for small 64-byte packets and scales smoothly to a 6 Gbps aggregate line rate.
Configurable 24V Passive Power over Ethernet (PoE)
The primary physical advantage of the ER-6P is its integrated multi-pair power injection system, which eliminates individual plug-in power bricks inside external enclosures:
-
5 Port Dedicated Power Matrix: Out of the box, ports eth0 through eth4 can be independently configured via software to deliver 24V Passive Power over Ethernet. This design provides direct, native compatibility for high-power airMAX sectors, LTU subscriber endpoints, and UniFi outdoor AP devices.
-
2-Pair and 4-Pair Power Paths: Supports both standard 2-pair 24V (12W max at 0.5A) and heavy-duty 4-pair 24V power configurations (24W max at 1.0A). This dual-path setup accommodates highly demanding outdoor sector radios and base station backhauls securely on a single line.
Independent Layer 3 Layout & Processor Capacity
Unlike budget network switches disguised as routers, every copper interface on the ER-6P operates on an isolated, non-switched physical architecture:
-
Dedicated 4-Core MIPS64 Processor: Powered by an enterprise 4-core, 1 GHz MIPS64 processor (Marvell Cavium Octeon III platform) backed by 1 GB of high-speed DDR3 memory. This dedicated architecture handles complex processingβincluding hardware NAT acceleration, stateful inspection firewalls, and QoS traffic shapingβwithout straining system stability.
-
SFP Fibre Backbone Taps: Houses an independent 1 Gbps SFP cage designed for hot-swappable transceiver modules. This port permits long-range uplink runs out to fibre media boxes, avoiding electrical surge loops over copper on high communication towers.
Interface Topology & Port Matrix
Each physical port maps into the operating framework as an autonomous Layer 3 routed line for advanced network segmentation:
| Port Label Designation | Physical Connection Type | Hardware Routing Role | Native Power Capabilities |
| eth0 | 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 Copper | Independent Layer 3 Routed Port | Configurable 24V Passive PoE |
| eth1 | 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 Copper | Independent Layer 3 Routed Port | Configurable 24V Passive PoE |
| eth2 | 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 Copper | Independent Layer 3 Routed Port | Configurable 24V Passive PoE |
| eth3 | 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 Copper | Independent Layer 3 Routed Port | Configurable 24V Passive PoE |
| eth4 | 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 Copper | Independent Layer 3 Routed Port | Configurable 24V Passive PoE |
| eth5 (SFP) | 1 Gbps SFP Transceiver Cage | Fibre Uplink / Core Backbone | Data Only |
Hardened Bare-Metal EdgeOS Command Environment
-
Provider-Tier Protocol Support: Powered natively by EdgeOS, providing full access to industrial-grade routing technologies including dynamic OSPF, RIP, BGP, and MPLS architectures, alongside comprehensive VLAN tag mapping and deep packet filtering.
-
Direct CLI Command Interface: Features a front-facing RJ45 Serial Console port. Network professionals can bypass standard graphic menus to configure security rules and routing structures directly using a command line interface.
-
Silent Passive Convection Cooling: The internal structural components are paired with a specialised chassis layout that distributes heat evenly across the metal shell. This fanless convection setup ensures completely silent operation and removes mechanical dust points.
Power Supply Installation Note: The ER-6P is powered via an external 60W AC/DC block (24V, 2.5A) fully included in this single retail commercial pack. The router draws a peak maximum of 16 Watts for its own operation, leaving a massive 44W power budget available exclusively for downstream passive PoE devices.
