These models use physical fabric ribbons to stamp text onto plain paper rolls, ensuring food order slips remain fully readable under intense kitchen heat lamps.

Your choice depends on your checkout layout and the type of till screen you use. A traditional wired USB desktop printer is a popular, plug-and-play solution for a fixed cash desk because a physical cable completely eliminates the risk of signal interference. If your storefront uses mobile tablets or iPads, a wireless Bluetooth or Wi-Fi printer provides a much cleaner, cable-free counter setup. This wireless flexibility lets you position the hardware exactly where it is needed, though you must check that your specific point of sale software application supports wireless hardware pairings before purchasing.

The vast majority of traditional desktop tills use industry-standard 80mm wide thermal paper rolls, which accommodate high-capacity paper lengths to minimise how often staff have to reload the tray during a busy shift. These larger rolls allow you to print itemised customer bills, add VAT breakdowns, and display custom return policies clearly. For micro-counters or mobile handheld till units where space is at a premium, more compact 58mm printing mechanisms are available, which use smaller rolls to keep the physical machine footprint as small as possible.

Wired and wireless thermal printers act as the hardware link for your secure cash handling components. Every standard desktop model features an integrated peripheral port on the back panel, typically labelled as an RJ11 or RJ12 drawer-kick connection. You simply plug your metal cash drawer wire directly into this slot. When a cash transaction is finalised within your till app, the software commands the printer to send a quick 24V electrical pulse down the cable. This pulse releases the internal mechanical latch inside the drawer instantly, popping the till open without requiring a manual key.

These internal mechanical features are designed to speed up serving times and reduce staff friction during peak lunchtime trade rushes. An automatic cutter cleanly clips each completed bill from the roll, eliminating ragged, hand-torn slips and preventing accidental paper snags. Drop-in paper loading allows operators to simply open the plastic cover, drop a fresh thermal roll into the internal chamber, and snap the lid shut without having to thread the paper through complex feeding wheels, keeping your customer service lines moving swiftly.
