Can You Network the Evolis Zenius 2 Classic? | POS Hardware

Can You Network the Evolis Zenius 2 Classic? | POS Hardware

If you are trying to set up a newly purchased Evolis Zenius 2 Classic on your local office network, you might find that your computer or server refuses to see the device.

The most common reason for this is a simple hardware limitation. Here is exactly why the Zenius 2 Classic cannot be pooled across a network, and how to resolve the problem if your business needs have changed.

The Short Answer: No

The Evolis Zenius 2 Classic is built strictly as a single-user desktop printer. It does not have network capabilities out of the box.

If you look at the back of the Zenius 2 Classic, you will notice a space where a standard network port usually sits. On the Classic model, this Ethernet port is physically blanked off with a plastic cover. There is no internal networking chip or port tucked behind that plastic panel, meaning no amount of software configuration or driver adjustment will allow it to connect to a local area network (LAN).

The Classic model relies entirely on a direct USB cable connection to a single computer.

Zenius 2 Classic vs Zenius 2 Expert

Evolis manufactures this specific printer engine in two distinct variations to suit different working environments:

  • Zenius 2 Classic: Designed for local, single-desk printing (such as a front reception desk or a lone HR workstation). It uses a standard USB interface only and cannot be upgraded with internal network ports or magnetic card encoders later on.

  • Zenius 2 Expert: Designed for shared office environments and technical security setups. This model comes factory-fitted with both USB and Ethernet connectivity, as well as support for Wi-Fi modules and internal smart card encoding options.

How to Share Card Printing Across Your Office

If you already own a Zenius 2 Classic and now need multiple staff members to print ID badges from different desks, you have two main options:

1. Use an External Print Server

While you cannot plug a network cable directly into the Classic printer, you can plug the printer's USB cable into a standalone external USB print server. This small hardware box bridges the USB connection onto your office network.

  • Please note: While this makes the printer visible over the network, standard Windows printer sharing or basic print servers can sometimes cause communication drops with the Evolis Premium Suite 2 management software, which relies on two-way data feedback to monitor ribbon levels.

2. Trade Up to the Zenius 2 Expert

If you need stable, multi-user access with full driver support across the department, moving to the Expert model is the most reliable path forward. The Zenius 2 Expert allows any authorised user on the network to send print jobs, check ribbon capacity, and run cleaning cycles remotely.
