Why Won’t My iPad Talk to My Star TSP143IV?: AOA vs MFi Explained

Why Won’t My iPad Talk to My Star TSP143IV?: AOA vs MFi Explained

You’ve just unboxed a new Star TSP143IV. You got it because your set up requires USB-C connection with your iPad. You plug your iPad in, the battery icon shows it’s charging, but when you go to print a receipt... nothing. No printer found.

This guide explains why you can't use the TSP143IV with an iPad, if you're wanting a USB set up.

In the UK POS market, receipt printers can use AOA or MFi - what's the difference?

MFi vs. AOA

To understand why your cable isn't working, we have to look at the "language" the devices are speaking.

1. The iPad Language: MFi (Made for iPad)

For an iPad to send data and receive power through a single cable, the hardware on the other end must have an MFi chip.

  • The Star TSP143IIIU (the 'U' model) has this chip. It’s why you can plug a Lightning cable into it and print instantly. The mC-Print3 CI also is compatible.

  • The Problem: The newer TSP143IV does not have this specific MFi USB-A data port.

Do I need to use a TSP143IIIU or mC-Print3 CI even if I have an USB-C iPad? Yes, you need to use it because of the MFi chip. The TSP143IV only supports AOA currently, and won't be able to speak to your tablet.

2. The Universal Language: AOA (Android Open Accessory)

The TSP143IV was built for Android and Cloud systems. It uses AOA.

The "How to Fix It" Guide

If you have a TSP143IV and an iPad, here are your options:

The "LAN Fix"

The TSP143IV is a "Dual Interface" printer - Use the Ethernet (LAN) port.

  1. Plug it in: Run an Ethernet cable from the back of the printer directly into your Wi-Fi router.

  2. Sync: Ensure your iPad is on the same Wi-Fi network.

  3. Find: In your POS app (Square, Shopify, etc.), search for a "Network Printer." It will find the TSP143IV instantly.

  • UK Pro Tip: This is actually better than USB because multiple iPads can now share the same printer.

What happens if you need USB connection and can't go with anything else? You'll have to purchase these printers instead:

The mC-Print3 Ci

If you absolutely must have a single-cable "Direct-to-Tablet" setup, you need a different model: the Star mC-Print3 (MCP31CI).

  • Why it works: The "CI" variant features USB-C Power Delivery (PD). Unlike the TSP143IV, this model is designed to "handshake" with the latest USB-C iPads, providing fast 20W charging and stable data over one cable.

  • The Benefit: AOA allows Android tablets to charge and print via one USB-C cable.

  • The Conflict: Apple does not support AOA. When you plug an iPad into the TSP143IV, the iPad sees the power (so it charges) but it ignores the AOA data signals. They are speaking two different languages.

The "Direct iPad" Choice: Star TSP143IIIU

If you want the simplest, most cost-effective wired setup for an iPad (especially those with Lightning ports), the TSP143IIIU remains the gold standard. Use this with older and newer generation iPads.

  • Pros: Guaranteed "Plug and Play" for iOS; charges the iPad while printing.

  • Cons: No native support for modern Android "Data & Charge." This is where you would use TSP143IV.

Key Questions Answered:

"Can I use an adaptor to make my iPad work with the TSP143IV USB?"

No. This isn't a physical plug issue; it's a software protocol issue. An adaptor won't add the MFi "handshake" that the iPad is looking for.

"What is SteadyLAN and why do I need it?"

SteadyLAN is a Star-exclusive feature available on the mC-Print3 range. It allows your tablet to get a wired internet connection through the printer's Ethernet cable. In crowded UK city centres where Wi-Fi is unreliable, this ensures your POS never goes offline.

"Does the mC-Print3 CI work with Windows?"

Yes! The USB-C Power Delivery standard on the Ci model makes it the perfect partner for Windows Surface tablets or modern laptops.
