Evolis Ribbons Guide: YMCKO & Monochrome Compatibility

Evolis Ribbons Guide: YMCKO & Monochrome Compatibility

Understanding Evolis ribbon names can feel like learning a new language, but it’s actually a simple logical system. Each letter in an Evolis ribbon part name represents a specific "panel" or layer of ink, that the printer applies to your plastic card.

Plastic Card Printing Technologies | Evolis

Letter Panel Name What it does
Y Yellow The first primary colour panel used to create full-colour images.
M Magenta The second primary colour; combines with Yellow to make reds/oranges.
C Cyan The third primary colour; combines with the others for blues and greens.
K Black (Resin) A solid black ink used for crisp text, barcodes, and QR codes.
O Overlay A clear, protective varnish that prevents fading and scratches.
I Inhibitor Used in Agilia/Avansia retransfer printers to leave areas (like magnetic stripes) unprinted.
F Fluorescent Prints "invisible" security text that only shows under UV light.

Understanding the Evolis Ribbon Naming System

Evolis uses a logical "Panel" system. Every letter in a ribbon name (like YMCKO) represents a specific layer of ink applied to the plastic card during the thermal transfer process.

  • Y (Yellow), M (Magenta), C (Cyan): These three primary colour panels combine to create a full-spectrum photo-quality image.

  • K (Black Resin): A dedicated panel for printing crisp, "true black" text, sharp barcodes, and high-contrast QR codes.

  • O (Overlay): A clear, protective varnish layer that protects the card from UV fading, water damage, and daily wear and tear.

  • H (Half-Panel): These ribbons have shorter Y, M, and C panels, allowing you to print a colour photo on one half of the card while using the black resin for the full width.

Common Ribbon Types:

MCKO: The Standard Colour Ribbon

This is the most popular choice for Evolis Primacy 2 and Zenius users. It is designed for single-sided printing where you need a full-colour photo, a company logo, and black text.

  • Ideal Application: Standard Staff ID badges and student ID cards.

YMCKOK: Dual-Sided Printing

Designed specifically for "Duplex" (double-sided) printers. It features an extra black (K) panel at the end of the sequence. This allows the printer to flip the card and print black text on the reverse without wasting colour panels.

  • Ideal Application: Membership cards with a photo on the front and terms and conditions or a barcode on the back.

Monochrome Ribbons: Single Colour Efficiency

Monochrome ribbons use only one colour throughout the entire roll. They are significantly cheaper per print and are used when full-colour imagery is not required.

  • Black Monochrome: Best for visitor passes or simple loyalty cards.

  • White, Silver, or Gold: Perfect for adding a premium finish to dark-coloured or black matte cards.

  • Scratch-Off: A specialised ribbon that creates a grey "scratch-to-reveal" panel for gift cards or pin numbers.

Compatibility by Printer Model:

Each Evolis printer range uses a specific ribbon format. Using the wrong ribbon can cause "Ribbon Not Found" errors or mechanical damage to the printhead.

  1. Badgy Series (Badgy100 / Badgy200): These use small, all-in-one cassettes designed for low-volume printing.

  2. Zenius and Primacy Series: These use high-capacity ribbons. The Primacy 2, in particular, supports larger 300-print colour rolls to reduce downtime in busy UK offices.

  3. Agilia Retransfer: The Agilia uses a two-step process (ribbon and retransfer film). This requires YMCK or YMCKK ribbons to achieve over-the-edge, high-definition printing.

Which Evolis Ribbons Are Best For What Printer?

1. Evolis Badgy Series (Badgy100 & Badgy200)

The Badgy range uses "all-in-one" cassettes that are easy to drop in. These are perfect for small businesses and schools.

  • Standard Colour (YMCKO): VBDG204EU – 100 prints. Best for photo IDs and membership cards.

  • Monochrome Black: CBGR0500K – 500 prints. Ideal for printing simple black text or barcodes on pre-printed cards.

  • All-in-One Kit: CBGP0001C Consumables Kit. Includes 1 colour ribbon and 100 PVC cards.

2. Zenius & Primacy Series (The Professional Standard)

These printers are the workhorses of the industry. They use high-capacity ribbons designed for speed and durability.

Colour Ribbons (YMCKO)

  • Standard Capacity: R5F002EAA – 200 prints.

  • High Capacity (Primacy 2): R5F008EAA – 300 prints. Engineered specifically for the Primacy 2's high-volume throughput.

  • Cost-Saving Half-Panel: R5H004NAA – 400 prints. Best if you only need colour for a photo/logo on a portion of the card.

Monochrome (Single Colour) Ribbons

Monochrome ribbons are the most cost-effective way to print text, serial numbers, or simple logos.

3. Evolis Agilia (Retransfer Technology)

The Agilia is Evolis’ latest high-definition retransfer printer. Because it prints on a film rather than the card directly, it requires specific consumables.

  • Monochrome Black: RTCT107NAAA – 2,400 prints.

  • Double-Sided Colour: RT5F102E100 (YMCKK) – 600 prints. Best for printing full colour on the front and black text on the back.

4. Legacy Models (Pebble, Dualys, Tattoo)

Do you have an older Evolis machine? We still stock genuine ribbons to keep your legacy hardware running.

Key Factors for UK Buyers

When sourcing ribbons in the UK, always check the Region Code. Evolis ribbons are region-locked. Genuine UK stock will typically feature an "EAA" suffix in the part number. Using a ribbon designed for the American or Asian market will result in a "Regional Ribbon Error," rendering the consumable unusable in a UK-purchased machine.

Always ensure you are using Evolis High Trust® consumables to maintain your manufacturer's warranty and ensure the longevity of your printer's thermal printhead.
